What Is Nylon (Polyamide / PA)?

Nylon (PA) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic featuring superior tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and impact toughness, widely used for load-bearing mechanical components. Its unique hygroscopic property requires special design considerations for tight-tolerance projects.

Nylon Common Grades for CNC Machining

PA6 (Nylon 6)

Superior flexibility and impact resistance, higher moisture absorption rate, cost-effective and widely stocked. Best choice for parts prioritizing shock resistance instead of strict dimensional stability.

PA66 (Nylon 66)

Higher rigidity, heat resistance up to 120℃ and lower water absorption. Default precision grade for dimension-critical structural machined components.

Glass-filled PA6 / PA66-GF

Glass fiber reinforcement improves stiffness and drastically reduces moisture swelling, ideal for tight tolerance parts working under varying ambient humidity, slightly poorer impact toughness.

MoS₂ Filled Nylon

Molybdenum disulfide additive enhances self-lubrication and wear performance, specially customized for sliding bearings and friction wear components.

Key Advantages of Machined Nylon Parts

Excellent Strength-to-Weight

Higher mechanical strength than common ABS with much lighter weight than metal, perfect for lightweight structural brackets replacing aluminum/steel.

Outstanding Fatigue & Toughness

Absorb repeated impact and cyclic vibration without cracking, long service life for dynamically loaded mechanical assemblies.

Great Wear & Abrasion Resistance

Resist surface abrasion under continuous sliding friction, extend service lifespan for wear pads, guides and bushing inserts.

Broad Chemical Compatibility

Resist oils, fuels, greases and alkaline liquids, better alkali resistance than POM for fluid contacting mechanical parts.

Stable CNC Machinability

Clean cutting performance without specialized tooling, consistent finished dimension for milling, turning and tapping processes.

Low Volume Cost Saving

No expensive injection mold investment, affordable for prototypes and small-batch customized mechanical parts with quick CAD modification.

Critical Design Point: Nylon Moisture Absorption

Nylon is hygroscopic and expands when absorbing ambient moisture, leading to dimensional variation. PA6 saturates ~9~10% weight moisture while PA66 ~7~8%, glass-filled grades only 1~3%.

Design Solutions:

  • Select GF filled nylon for tight-tolerance parts in a changing humidity environment
  • Reserve assembly clearance to compensate for material expansion & shrinkage
  • Prefer PA66 over PA6 for dimension-sensitive finished products
  • Switch to low-hygroscopic POM if an ultra-stable dimension is mandatory

We will remind all customers of moisture-related risks before production starts, as part of the quotation process.

Key Design Guidelines for Nylon Machining

Control Moisture Influence

Reserve assembly clearance for humidity expansion; choose GF nylon for tight tolerance finished products.

Minimum Wall Thickness ≥1.5mm

Thinner walls easy deform during clamping & machining, mark thin-wall area on your drawing for process adjustment.

Optimize Thread Drill Size

Nylon thread springs back after tapping, adopt slightly larger pilot hole than standard metal tap specification.

Inner Corner R≥0.5mm

Avoid sharp inner corners to eliminate stress crack under cyclic mechanical load.

Thermal Expansion Clearance

Set assembly gap between nylon and metal parts to compensate different thermal expansion rate.

Chemical Compatibility Check

Nylon resistant to oil/alkali but damaged by strong acid, confirm working fluid environment before material selection.

Tolerance & QC Standard

General Tolerance: ±0.1 mm

Precision Tolerance: Up to ±0.005 mm

Every nylon piece is fully dimensionally inspected against the drawing before delivery, and FA inspection is available for bulk orders on request.

Available Surface Finishes

  • As-Machined: Standard finish for most structural mechanical parts
  • Fine Polishing: Smooth surface for low-friction sliding contact faces
  • Bead Blasting: Uniform matte texture for visible aesthetic housings

Note: Nylon is not suitable for regular painting/plating without special surface activation treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: It’s a process that cuts solid PA6 or PA66 blocks into custom parts using computer-controlled machines. This delivers precise, functional components without injection mold costs. Send us your CAD file to get started.

A: We machine PA6, PA66, glass-filled nylon (PA6-GF/PA66-GF), and MoS₂-filled nylon. PA6 suits impact-heavy parts, PA66 fits dimension-critical work, glass-filled grades handle tight tolerances in humid settings, and MoS₂ nylon excels in sliding wear applications.

A: Standard general tolerance is ±0.1 mm, with precision tolerances down to ±0.005 mm on critical features. Mark your priority features on the drawing so we can plan the process accordingly.

A: Yes, nylon is hygroscopic and expands as it absorbs ambient moisture, which shifts dimensions. PA6 saturates at about 9–10% by weight, PA66 at 7–8%, and glass-filled grades at only 1–3%. For tight-tolerance parts, choose glass-filled nylon or PA66, and reserve assembly clearance for expansion.

A: Standard production runs 5–15 business days, depending on part complexity and quantity. Express rush service is available for urgent projects—just flag the deadline when you request a quote.

A: No, we accept single prototypes with zero MOQ. This lets you validate a real PA-material part with actual mechanical properties before committing to a batch.

A: We offer as-machined finish, fine polishing for low-friction sliding faces, and bead blasting for a uniform matte texture. Note that nylon does not accept standard painting or plating without special surface activation. Specify your finish needs when requesting a quote.

A: We prefer 3D CAD files in STEP or IGES format, paired with a 2D drawing showing tolerances, finish, and working environment. We can also work from a 2D PDF with full dimensions, though quoting and machining may take slightly longer.

A: Every part is fully dimensionally inspected against your drawing before shipping, using CMM, calipers, micrometers, and optical comparators. We provide an inspection report on request, plus FA inspection for bulk orders.

A: Send your CAD files and we’ll return a detailed quotation within 24 hours, including a free grade recommendation and moisture design tips. Parts start at $50 per piece with no prototype MOQ.
